64th Independence Day Celebration: Team SSAP Wins Para-Soccer Trophy

By Lanre Oloyede

In a display of unity, fun, and patriotism, the Senior Special Assistant to the President (SSAP), Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, on Tuesday led hundreds of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in joining other Nigerians to celebrate the country’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

The event took place at the Monoliza Sports Centre, Central Area, Abuja, which was filled to capacity as thousands of citizens came together to celebrate the 64 years of nationhood of the “Giant of Africa.”

The Independence Day Youth Celebration, organized by the Renewed Hope Youth Engagement in collaboration with the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, featured a variety of entertaining activities.

Highlights of the activities included a football tournament, para-soccer event, basketball competition, swimming contest, skating displays, a concert, and a trade exhibition by vendors.

In the para-soccer final, Team SSAP triumphed over Team E.S with a convincing 3-0 victory.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President, who had the honor of opening the match with a ceremonial kick, encouraged both teams to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, play fairly, and adhere to the game’s rules.

The Senior presidential aide urged the athletes to showcase their abilities, proving to the world that there is, indeed, “ability in disability.”

The event culminated in a concert that ran late into the night, offering a mix of music, food, and drinks. Trophies and cash prizes were presented to the winners in recognition of their achievements.

In his address, the SSAP emphasized the importance of celebrating Nigeria’s progress over the past 64 years.

He commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for instilling a renewed sense of hope and opportunity for Nigeria’s 35.1 million PWDs.

The SSAP acknowledged that Nigeria’s journey has been marked by challenges, but underscored the resilience of the nation in overcoming obstacles.

“The journey has been rough and tough, but as a strong, diverse nation, we have triumphed over countless challenges,” the SSAP remarked. “With President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we are charting a new course for Nigeria—a course that includes every Nigerian, regardless of physical ability.”

He further emphasized that inclusivity is not optional but essential for national progress. “This administration understands that inclusivity is not just a choice, but a necessity. That is why we have placed special focus on ensuring equal opportunities for all Nigerians, particularly PWDs, in the areas of education, employment, healthcare, and social integration.”

The Senior Special Assistant also highlighted the government’s efforts to address the economic challenges faced by PWDs through strategic reforms that are shaping a more inclusive Nigeria. He pointed out the significant progress in implementing the National Disability Act and the establishment of programs aimed at empowering the PWD community.

“While the road may have been long and challenging, there is light at the end of the tunnel. We are building a future where PWDs have access to dignified work, quality education, and the freedom to contribute to the growth of this nation without limitations,” he concluded.
