In commemoration of the 2025 International Workers Day, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, has called on the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to approve a Special Pension Scheme and extension of the retirement age for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the federal workforce.
Hon. Abba Isa made this request in a statement issued to mark the Workers Day celebration. He said the proposal is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at ensuring the full inclusion of PWDs in the nation’s policies, projects, and workforce.
Specifically, he is seeking FEC approval for a Special Pension Scheme tailored for PWDs in the Federal Civil Service and an extension of the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 years, and from 35 to 40 years of service, for PWDs working in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
“These measures are vital steps toward ensuring equity, dignity, and the sustained contribution of PWDs in the federal workforce,” Abba Isa stated.
He emphasized that while Workers Day is globally recognized as a day of celebration, it also presents a solemn moment to reflect on the unique challenges faced by workers with disabilities in Nigeria.
“Far too often, workers with disabilities face harsh and discriminatory environments that hinder their full participation and productivity. Yet, despite these challenges, many continue to demonstrate unmatched resilience and contribute meaningfully to our economy, institutions, and communities. Today, we salute your courage and unwavering spirit,” he said.
The Senior presidential aide reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and decent work for all citizens. He stressed that the government is determined to enforce reasonable accommodations and implement policies that make workplaces more accessible, safe, and inclusive.
Highlighting the National Disability Act, he reiterated the constitutional mandate to uphold the 5% employment quota for PWDs and emphasized that it is both a legal and moral obligation.
“As the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, I reaffirm our collective resolve to uphold and advance this commitment,” he said.
He concluded with a call for justice, fairness, and equal opportunity in all workplaces, stating: “Let us build a Nigeria where ability, not disability, determines opportunity. Happy Workers Day to all, and a special salute to the heroic workers with disabilities across Nigeria.”
