Rivers Crisis: Stay away from protests to avert breakdown of law, Chief Lekan-Ojo advises former LG chairmen

Good Governance Advocate, Chief Jackson Lekan-Ojo has asked former Local government chairmen in Rivers State to stay away from protests as this could lead to breakdown of law and order in the State.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, the Public Affairs Analyst said protests could bring about serious insecurity in the state because some miscreants could infiltrate and hijack the protest and begin to cause mayhem that could lead to loss of lives and property.

The Port-harcourt based security expert maintained that, anything that could aggravate the tense situation already in existence in the state should be averted.

He advised that instead of taking to the street in protest, the aggrieved former chairmen should approach the law court to seek redress.

“As a registered body, they have right to approach a court of law to lay their complaints. But protest could lead to breakdown of law and order,” Chief Lekan-Ojo stated.

Recall that Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara had appointed and  swore in new caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas of the state.

The governor inaugurated the new caretaker chairmen hours after the House of Assembly, led by factional Speaker, Victor Jumbo, screened and confirmed the nominees.

Governor Fubara had forwarded the list to the state House of Assembly on Tuesday and the nominees were invited for screening as early as 8 am on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West.

The nomination came amid a renewed political crisis in the state, as former council chairmen have refused to vacate their offices after their tenure expired
