APC chieftain, Lekan-Ojo backs Labour’s strike over demand for wage increase

By Lanre Oloyede

Public Affairs Analyst and Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Jackson Lekan-Ojo, has declared his support for the industrial action embarked upon by the organized labour over their demand for wage increase.

Nigerian Pilot recalls that Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and its counterpart, Trade Union Congress, TUC Monday declared an indefinite strike to press home their demand for a living wage which they pegged at N460,000 per month.

Our correspondent across the country earlier reported that the strike which was largely observed by workers across sectors paralyzed business and economic activities nationwide.

In an interview with our correspondent, Chief Lekan-Ojo stated that the current pay being earned by workers is very poor and can’t cater for households as price of commodities in the market has hit the roof.

The APC chieftain said Nigerian workers are pauperized by government, stressing that their monthly take home pay can’t even take them home in a week.

He stressed that going on strike is not against the law rather it is the fundamental rights of workers to demand what belongs to them.

The public affairs analyst noted that though the minimum wage being demanded by labour is high but If government can strike a balance they will be able to afford the salary.

“How are the leaders managing the nation’s resources. If they are mismanaging the nation’s resources, is it the workers that are supposed to suffer for it?,” he queried.

He however advised the federal government to meet with labour in order to reach a compromise so that the strike can be aborted.
